Highlights

Vienna is not just a city of one past, but a city of many pasts. Delve into Vienna’s past and present on an insightful 3-hour walking tour of its colorful history and architecture.

Your tour begins at Michaelerplatz, where the Hofburg, the Habsburg’s imperial palace and seat of power since the thirteenth century, dominates the square. Clockwise from the palace is the green and gray Loos House, designed by Austrian architect Adolf Loos (1870 1933).

From there, the tour continues down Kohlmarkt and the Graben, currently one of the city’s most fashionable shopping districts and home to such varied sights as a plague column, a baroque church, grand buildings in many different architectural styles, and the national architectural icon of Austria: Stephansdom.

The tour takes in three areas associated with the Habsburg’s grandiose tripartite burials. While St. Stephen’s Cathedral is the final resting place for their imperial entrails, the humble Capuchin Church nearby houses centuries of sarcophagi of Vienna’s rulers, and St. Augustine’s Church, which contains dozens of silver urns containing the hearts of the Hapsburgs.

Along the edge of the inner city, examine remnants of the old city walls from the 12th century. These walls protected the city from two sieges by the Ottoman Empire (1529 and 1683) but were eventually torn down to make way for the grand circular boulevard of the Ringstrasse (Vienna’s answer to Paris’s grand boulevards).

The walk continues to Schwarzenbergplatz, where a massive fountain and memorial to the Russian soldiers who died liberating Vienna from the Nazis dominates an area where most of the city’s embassies can be found. After a quick detour to the Belvedere Palace, head back towards Karlsplatz and enjoy a stunning view of one of the gold-domed Secession building and the Naschmarkt.

Finally, weave through the Museums Quartier and Maria Theresien Platz, home to the city’s largest concentration of museums, while discussing the present day cultural, political, and economic orientations of Austria and its capital.

Excellent way to plunge into the heart of the city - Selin is an excellent guide, she has thorough knowledge of the city both history and socio-cultural aspects of everyday life. Extremely professional and competent as well as empathic and jovial. A pleasure working for almost three hours with her and exchanging views and comments. Would do again.

Don't think twice about booking this amazing tour! - Annelie was amazing! She was more than a tour guide -- someone with deep interest and knowledge about Vienna from both an academic and lived experience. We've been on a lot of tours over the years, and this was hands down one we will not forget. The little touches -- playing music of Mozart and Haydn, tasting Sisi's favorite candies, stopping for a Viennese snack that you wouldn't find in an ordinary guidebook – set it apart. Bonus points for not cutting any corners even in the terrible rain and wind. The small tour size was well worth the cost. Don't think twice about booking!

A true professional - Our tour guide, Katarina, was a very informative and professional person. She took extra time to answer all of our questions so we could learn more of Vienna’s history. Knowledgeable also of world affairs. She was calm while being challenged by a person in the public domain. She did not let the rude interruption derail the rest of our tour. We would recommend her to everyone!!

Very informative and a good walk all around downtown. - This was an intense walking tour with lots of information. Our guide was very informed and kept us moving throughout the downtown and I would highly recommend. We were a group of two families and by a happy coincidence their son is attending the university that my son will be attending next year.

Detailed and informative tour led by Wolfgang! - Wolfgang was a delightful and engaging guide. My daughter and I had the good fortune of being the only people in the group, so he accommodated our interests in art and some sites that most tourists would not see. We were even able to work around a thunderstorm by learning a bit more in one of the cathedrals we (intentionally, but in a timely way) ducked into, and stayed out of the hour's worth of rain with a few other covered stops. I would recommend Wolfgang as a tour guide to anyone - he was a wonderful host to the city of Vienna!

Enjoyable but overpriced - Billie was a fun and helpful guide. Turns out my wife and I were her only guests in this slot so she gave us 100% attention. We saw the Hofburg, St Stephen’s cathedral, and art deco buildings. She also showed us alternative cafes to get sacher torte without lining up at the overrated Sacher Hotel. Plus gave tips on where we can get good schnitzel and sausages. We would have loved to also visit the city hall, parliament and plague column, and would’ve wanted to see the Holy Lance but these weren’t part of the itinerary. For a purely walking tour, this was too expensive at $125 per person. Maybe opt for the cheaper big group tour.
