Highlights
  • Wingfield-Phillips Rain Forest Nature Trail - In the early morning, meet your guide at the port in St. Kitts.

Together with your small group, journey to the Wingfield Estate, one of the oldest plantations on the island, via an open safari truck.

On the way to the forest you will see a number of interesting Carib petroglyphs and the historic village of Old Road where Sir Thomas Warner, along with his family and 14 others, began the first permanent European settlement in the Leeward Islands.

Jump out of the truck at the Wingfield Estate, set in the picturesque foot hills of the central mountain range and the gateway to the rainforest.

  • Poinciana Tours - Enjoy the cool tropical breeze amidst the lush tropical forest as you journey on foot along the Peter Manning Trail. As you walk, spot green vervet monkeys swinging on tree vines and, if you like, take a refreshing dip in the river.

Nice hike up through the rainforest - Zidan picked the three of us (me and my two college aged kids) and drove us to the site, giving us some local history on the way. After a short tour of the sugar mill and rum distillery, we headed up the hillside. There were just a few short steep stretches with most of the trail being a gentle slope upward. Along the way, Zidan provided us with more local history and information about the plants and trees we saw along the way. The kids did a little vine swinging about half way up. There was water flowing down the creek all the to the top, but not enough to keep us from cross crossing the creek Ed several times. There were a few places where we had to hop across some slippery rocks and branches, so I guess there is the potential for an ankle turn if you aren’t paying attention, but it was a sunny day so we could see the trail clearly.

Do it!! - Such a great experience from start to finish! Jaleel and Ellie are altogether professionals! We were picked up at our hotel and off to our start point, had our delicious pastry, provided. Started our ascent, hiked the volcano in about 2:20 before descending. Along the way we learned lots about the plants, trees and history of the volcano and St Kitts. The hike was strenuous but fun! Jaleel had our safety at the forefront of his thoughts, making sure everyone was safe and happy. I would definitely recommend, a beautiful hike and worth the effort!

Enjoyable morning hike! - Our rainforest hike was wonderful. David is herbalist at heart and knows every plant and its heath benefits. We traveled through the botanical gardens, saw a batik demonstration, visited a run distillery, walked through the quiet forest and ended with a smoothie at a little store by the distillery. For a small fee he took us to the beach and then brought us back to our ship. I highly recommend this tour if you are in St. Kitts. You do not need to be in tip top shape but will walk up hill and on a rocky path for a couple hours. Enjoy!

Rainforest hike - My husband, two daughters (ages 15 and 16) and I did this tour. We all enjoyed it. It includes the Caribelle Batik, the grounds of the oldest sugar plantation and the rainforest hike. Our guide, Zidan, was really knowledgeable, engaging, and informative. The hike was mostly all-levels, but it did get a little tougher terrain towards the end before we headed back, but this seems to be adjusted depending on what kind of difficulty-level the hikers are/want. If you are looking for something to do in St. Kitt’s, would recommend!

What a Hike - There seem to be two very different types of rainforest hiking tours that you may be on when you book this. A lot of the reviews we read described this tour as exploring trees by the zip-line area near the old rum distillery with a focus on plant uses and maybe some animals and the hike wasn't too strenuous. Then there's the hike we somehow were booked on. 4 hours+ round-trip of quite strenuous hiking up 3,000 feet to the edge of the dormant volcanic crater. It was an amazing view at the top, but we weren't expecting that and at several points we weren't sure we could make it all the way up. It's not at all clear how they decide whether to give you the relatively easy hike or the very difficult hike. So better ask. We are glad we did it, and the 5 stars is because it was an experience we won't soon forget. But there ought to be two different tours if one is relatively easy and one is hard. The Mount Liamuiga hike we ended up on is described online as "a strenuous hike through rainforest and jungle over limbs and rocks; totally doable for those who are fit, adventuresome and limber." Again, just be sure to ask which hike you're on to be sure you're prepared.

DECENT WALK - Our guide, Kasim, was knowledgeable and entertaining and was able to identify many tree species and their medicinal uses. Unfortunately and surprisingly we neither saw nor heard any wildlife on the walk. Nothing was mentioned and we did not see any petroglyphs mentioned in the excursion synopsis.
