Highlights
  • Yala National Park - This is a leopard country, and they are the Lords of the Jungle! With a leopard density that’s higher than anywhere else on this planet, these menacing predators prowl majestically in Yala, while elephants roam in their numbers with cautious deer scampering by their side.

Yala combines a strict nature reserve with a national park. Divided into 5 blocks, the park has a protected area of nearly 130,000 hectares of land consisting of light forests, scrubs, grasslands, tanks, and lagoons.
Situated in Sri Lanka’s southeast hugging the panoramic Indian Ocean, Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and was designated a national park in 1938. Ironically, the park was initially used as a hunting ground for the elite under British rule. Yala is home to 44 varieties of mammals and 215 bird species. Among its more famous residents are the world’s biggest concentration of leopards, majestic elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted dear, peacocks, and crocodiles.

Additional Information

For a first-timer in wildlife safaris like myself, the trip to Yala National Park was unquestionably one of the most thrilling and unforgettable experiences during my journey across Sri Lanka.

The thrill of setting off on a jeep safari, knowing that you’re about to witness iconic creatures in their natural environment while maneuvering through the rugged terrains of the wildlife park, is simply breathtaking.

Adding to this, the realization that Yala National Park is esteemed as the top wildlife park in Sri Lanka’s tear-drop shaped island.

This outstanding reputation stems from its diverse landscape, immense concentration and variety of wildlife - along with the recognition of the park as one of the prime locations globally to spot leopards living freely in the wild.

Amazing - Amazing!! We took a 3 day tour ( Yala National Park/Ella/Kandy) with Sammy and had the best adventures! Everything from transport to accommodation to experiences in the areas visited such as cultural dance/fire walking, tea factory, gemstone mines, traditional wood crafting - were all 5 star. We only wish we could’ve extended our tour. Can’t recommend enough - the highlight - a close up of a family of elephants including a little baby!! Most jeeps had whizzed past but Sammy and his guide spotted them! Bliss! Thanks Sammy we shall be back soon!

Thoroughly enjoyable - We enjoyed 2 full days with Sammy tours.Day 1, We were met at the cruise port in Columbo and shown to our tour bus, which was clean and comfortable. During our journey to Kandy we sampled local fruits provided by local growers. We learned about Sri Lanka's culture and had an escorted tour of the Temple of the Tooth. This was followed by a lunch and return journey to the ship. Day 2, we were met at the cruise port in Hambantota for our trip to Yala National Park. having a guided tour and seeing wildlife in their natural habitats. We were afterwards taken for a typical Sri Lankan lunch, Sammy Tours are recommended 100% to make your visit to this beautiful island memorable, educational and enjoyable.
