Takalik Abaj is an archaeological site that showcases both Olmec and Mayan characteristics, and it thrived from the 9th century BC to the 10th century AD. As one of the earliest and most magnificent sites in the ancient Mayan world, it stands as one of the largest locations boasting sculptured monuments on the Pacific coastal plain. Notably, it possesses a significant collection of Olmec-style sculptures.
At the site, there’s a Mayan royal burial site and instances of Mayan hieroglyphic transcripts that are some of the oldest in the Mayan region. In addition, the site is known for its intricate water drainage system and abundant sculptured monuments. Accommodation for overnight stays is conveniently located near the site.
