Additional Information

This petite alpine hamlet gained prominence due to its rendition of Christ’s Passion, its 18th-century murals gracing the community’s homes, and the enduring legacy of woodcraft. Nestled in the Ammer valley, the locale derives its name from the Ammer river meandering its way through the hamlet. While its antiquity dates back to the late Bronze Age, the establishment of a petite monastery in the 9th century marked the beginning of the village as we perceive it today. Explore how this hamlet turned into a hub of woodcraft from the 14th century onwards. Roam the lanes and delve into how the aftermath of the 30 Years War resulted in the resurgence of the Black Plague, a chain of events culminating in the creation of the Passion of Christ play, esteemed globally as one of the preeminent portrayals of Christ’s final days. Hear tales of the “Märchenhäuser”, the fairy stories chronicled by the Brothers Grimm, derived from early 19th century German oral narratives. Oberammergau is indeed a community that provokes awe and fascination, embracing both the holy and the secular.

Once in Lifetime - An iconic experience. The performers, chorus, and orchestra were wonderful. The music spectacular. The sheer magnitude of the event is an amazing experience. Add to that the historical significance of the play and it is a once-in-a-lifetime event. The village is charming and only a little touristy. Be careful if you book a village-sponsored tour and make sure you check out the accommodations before you book. We were extremely disappointed in ours - although they were walking distance to the downtown - WHICH IS A MUST! I've been fortunate to attend the Passion Play twice in my lifetime. It was just as wonderful the second time as it was 50 years earlier Pro-tip: make sure to take a small flashlight to read the play. The final act takes place well after dark.
