Dachau holds the grim distinction of being Germany’s first concentration camp, established less than two months after Hitler’s rise to power. Unique in its operation for the entire 12 year period of Nazi oppression, Dachau set the brutal standard for all subsequent camps and acquired the chilling moniker of ‘school of terror’ due to the presence of the Reich’s largest SS training base. By April 29th, 1945, when it was liberated by the U.S, Dachau had imprisoned 206,000 individuals of 34 unique ethnicities, of whom over 43,000 were ruthlessly killed.
In 1965, Dachau gained the status of being the first International Memorial of a concentration camp.
This tour aims to explore the historical significance of Dachau and shed light on the sociopolitical and economic conditions of the 1930s that led to such a horrific episode in Europe’s past.
