Highlights

After the defeat in WWII, Berlin was divided into 4 sectors controlled by the western allies and the soviets. But soon their coalition began to crumble when a new conflict emerged: The Cold War. Being in a front position between the two systems Berlin became one of the main scenes in this conflict of spies, deceits and clandestine agencies. The history of the second half of the 20th century will be the main issue in this walking tour.

In this tour we will talk about the daily life of divided Berlin and how east Berliners lived the existence and the fall of their country, the German Democratic Republic (GDR). We will visit the most iconic places of the former capital of the GDR: the memorial to the victims of the Berlin Wall on Bernauer Strasse. We will then hit Alexanderplatz and the Karl-Marx-Allee, the monumental Communist avenue. The journey will come to a close with the longest section of the wall still standing, between the districts of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg: the East Side Gallery, with its famous wall paintings and the Oberbaumbrücke, the most beautiful bridge in Berlin with a breathtaking view over the river Spree.

Exciting - The visit is fascinating, the guide addresses lots of little-known aspects with lots of anecdotes and individual stories when Berlin was separated by the wall. The course is well designed, the explanations clear and very interesting, I highly recommend! Nathalie

Unmissable visit! - Excellent visit with Natacha as guide. The history of the former GDR and the wall was told in a very educational way. Three hours are essential to better understand the city.

Fabulous - Very documented and available guide. She knew how to transport us to Cold War Berlin and share the “small” (and often terrible) stories in big History.

A discovery of East Berlin - On March 29, 2024 we followed the visit "discovering East Berlin" with Natacha who shared her knowledge and many anecdotes on the subject. Exciting visit! We crossed the city on foot and sometimes by transport. Do it without hesitation!

East Berlin - Very interesting visit with a well-documented guide on the period, who speaks loudly and clearly. At the end of the visit we better understand the succession of events from the advent of the wall to its fall. A small regret about the number of participants: 25 which does not correspond to my vision of a "small group".
